Navigating Foodservice Equipment Certifications
Foodservice equipment can adhere to a wide range of regional, national and international standards, including standards written or administered by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), NSF International (NSF), Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI), and ENERGY STAR®. These small icons can represent information about sanitation, safety, performance and energy efficiency. Knowing what these symbols mean and who is qualified to perform product testing and certification can improve a consultant’s ability to make the most informed recommendations about products that can impact a foodservice or food retail operator’s business.

NSF Certification Mark |
The registered NSF Certification Mark on a food equipment product confirms that NSF has assessed and certified its conformity with the relevant NSF/ANSI standard. As part of the certification process, the production facility is audited unannounced, at least annually. The audit ensures that all the requirements of the standard continue to be met, quality assurance and quality control procedures are followed in fabrication, products are sampled and retested on schedule, and labeling and product literature are true and accurate. |
 |
cNSFus Mark |
The cNSFus Mark indicates compliance with both Canadian and U.S. requirements. Inspectors and safety code officials in Canada look for product certifications by organizations accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). |
UL
UL is an independent, not-for-profit, nongovernmental organization. UL is a source for product compliance and serves a wide range of customers including manufacturers, retailers, consumers and regulating bodies. UL has been testing products for public safety for more than a century
and has developed more than 1,000 standards for safety. To learn more about UL certification,
visit www.ul.com.

UL Listing |
The UL Listing symbol is one of the most common UL marks and means that UL found that representative samples of this product met UL’s safety requirements. These requirements are primarily based on UL’s own published standards for safety. |
 |
C-UL Listing |
The C-UL Listing mark is applied to products for the Canadian market. The products marked with this symbol have been evaluated to meet Canadian safety requirements, which might be somewhat different from U.S. safety requirements. |
 |
C-UL US Listing |
C-UL US Listing was introduced in early 1998 to indicate compliance with both Canadian and U.S. requirements. The Canada/US UL mark is optional, but UL encourages those manufacturers with products certified for both countries to use this new, combined mark. |
 |
UL Gas-Fired Listing |
The UL Gas-Fired listing mark is used exclusively on gas-fired appliances and equipment. The Gas-Fired mark indicates a product’s compliance to nationally recognized gas standards, including UL and ANSI Z21/Z83 Series standards. The Gas-Fired mark signals that a product has been evaluated to reasonably foreseeable hazards including both gas and electrical hazards. |
 |
C-UL Gas-Fired |
The C-UL Gas-Fired listing mark is applied to products for the Canadian market. These products have been evaluated and determined to meet the Canadian safety requirements such as CSA/CGA standards. |
 |
C-UL US Gas-Fired |
The C-UL US Gas-Fired symbol is placed on gas-fired equipment that has been evaluated to meet both the Canadian and U.S. safety standards. |
 |
UL-EPH |
The UL-EPH symbol appears on products that have been evaluated to meet the Environmental and Public Health (EPH) standards. The “classified” version is used for products complying with ANSI/NSF standards and other food equipment hygiene codes and requirements. Examples include gas and electrically powered foodservice equipment, meat and poultry plant equipment and drinking-water additives. |
 |
UL-EPH Listed |
The UL-EPH Listed mark is used for products complying with UL’s own published EPH standards for safety. |
 |
UL Optional Blue Sanitation Mark |
The UL Optional Blue Sanitation mark appears on foodservice equipment and is used in addition (supplemental) to the classification mark shown above. |
CSA
CSA International is a leading provider of product testing and certification services. CSA tests products for compliance with national and international standards, and it issues certification
marks for qualified products. CSA certification marks mean that a product has been evaluated
by a formal process involving examination, testing and follow-up inspection, and that it
complies with applicable standards for safety and performance. More information is available
at www.csa-international.org.

CSA |
The CSA mark on its own indicates that a product is certified primarily for the Canadian market, to the applicable Canadian standards. If a product has features from more than one area (such as electrical equipment with fuel-burning features), the mark indicates compliance with all applicable standards. |
 |
CSA US or NRTL |
The CSA US or NRTL mark indicates that a product meets applicable U.S. standards, including those from ANSI, ASME, ASSE, ASTM, NSF, CSA America and UL. If a product has features from more than one area (such as electrical equipment with fuel-burning features), the mark indicates compliance with all applicable standards. |
 |
CSA with C/US or NRTL/C |
The CSA C/US or NRTL/C mark signifies that the product meets applicable U.S. and Canadian standards, including those from CSA, CSA America, ANSI, ASME, ASSE, ASTM, NSF and UL. If a product has features from more than one area (such as electrical equipment with fuel-burning features), the mark indicates compliance with all applicable standards. |
ETL
ETL is the Certification mark used by Intertek. Intertek is a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), similar to UL, CSA International and NSF International. An NRTL provides independent evaluation, testing and certification of any electrically operated or gas- and oil-fired product. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) determines what organizations are qualified to be an NRTL. For more information, visit www.osha.gov. Additionally, Intertek is the world’s largest independent testing, inspection and certification partner. For more information, visit www.intertek-etlsemko.com/portal/page/cust_portal/ITK_PGR.

A product bearing the ETL Listed mark is determined to have met the minimum requirements of prescribed product safety standards. Moreover, the mark indicates that the manufacturer’s production site conforms to a range of compliance measures and is subject to periodic follow-up inspections to verify continued conformance. The ETL Listed mark is used on electrical, gas- and oil-fired products. The ETL Listed mark is the equivalent of the UL Listed and CSA Listed marks throughout the United States and Canada. |
 |
ETL Listed Mark – United States |
A product bearing the ETL Listed mark with the U.S. identifier at the 4 o’clock position has been tested and deemed compliant with U.S. product safety standards only. |
 |
ETL Listed Mark – Canada |
An ETL Listed mark with a C identifier at the 8 o’clock position means the product bearing it complies with Canadian product safety standards only. |
 |
ETL Listed Mark – Canada/United States |
An ETL Listed mark with both U.S. and C identifiers at the 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions, respectively, signifies that the product bearing the mark complies with both U.S. and Canadian product safety standards. |
