The volume of solid waste sent to landfills, and the business and environmental costs of hauling it away, has a major impact on a foodservice operation’s sustainability efforts and bottom line. Eliminating waste might not be a reality for your clients, but you can help them reduce solid waste and waste costs.

One way to reduce solid waste is to use a pulper, such as Hobart’s WastePro™ system, to turn solid waste—including food waste, paper, cardboard, milk cartons, straws, napkins, polystyrene ware, aluminum foil and Styrofoam—into pulp. Compacting solid waste into a pulp reduces waste volume by 88 percent, addressing pressing environmental concerns and dramatically cutting waste costs. In addition, decreasing waste volume improves employee productivity and sanitary conditions, lowers operating and maintenance costs, reduces the number of garbage can liners and decreases silverware loss.

“For employees, it [compacting solid waste] means eliminating the need to secure and dispose of garbage, raising productivity and morale,” says Allen Hasken, sales development manager. “Kitchen sanitation is improved by eliminating garbage receptacles in the kitchen, and reducing the need for plumber and exterminator visits caused by improper waste management.”

An engineered system, essentially a garbage transportation system, can even be designed with the pulper, close to the scrapping area, and a waterpress located close to a dumpster to further reduce the number of trips required to move the pulp. The chute can discharge right into the dumpster.

Your clients can process up to 1,250 pounds of solid waste an hour in the close-coupled units and up to 3,000 pounds an hour in the remote system. Finally, Hobart WastePro equipment helps your clients stay ahead of government regulations concerning waste disposal and greatly reduces the volume of waste placed in landfills.

Measurable savings of the Hobart WastePro include:

  • Water savings of up to 66 percent compared to using a disposer.
  • 95 percent of water reuse from closed-loop design.
  • 80 percent savings on garbage can plastic liners.
  • Optional silver-saver trough magnet can save up to 60 percent in silverware replacement.
  • Minimizes or eliminates clogged waste lines, since far fewer solids flow into the sanitary sewer.
